Beyond local success, Mahamaya has also produced swimmers who have represented Sri Lanka at international meets, carrying the school’s name onto global stages. BASKETBALL
Basketball at Mahamaya Girls’ College has become a proud tradition, built on teamwork, resilience, and achievement. The team’s historic victory at the National School Games Under-20 Championship in 2023, after 27 years, and the alumnae triumph at the Masters Women’s Championship in 2024, highlight its growing legacy. Today, basketball stands proudly as one of the college’s celebrated sports, inspiring students to carry forward the spirit of excellence on and off the court.
WEIGHT LIFTING
Over the years, Mahamaya weightlifters have excelled at provincial and national championships, winning medals and earning titles such as Best Lifter. Their success has also extended to the international stage, with athletes representing Sri Lanka and achieving recognition at events like the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and the World Championships. These accomplishments reflect the college’s commitment to nurturing champions who inspire future generations and uphold Mahamaya’s legacy of excellence in weightlifting.
WESTERN CADET BAND
The Western Cadet Band of Mahamaya Girls’ College is renowned for its discipline, precision, and national recognition. Since joining the National Cadet Corps in 1992, the band has won the All Island Western Cadet Band Championship multiple times, including a historic 10-year streak from 1996 to 2006, and earned the title of President’s Girls’ Cadet Band of Sri Lanka. In recent years, the band has continued to shine, being honored at Colours Awards Ceremonies and performing at national events such as Independence Day celebrations, proving its legacy of excellence remains strong today.
HOCKEY
Over the years, the team has competed at district, provincial, and national tournaments, earning recognition for their skill and determination. The annual “Flames of Gold” big match in Kandy has become a highlight, showcasing Mahamaya’s competitive spirit against top rivals. Many players have competed in Sri Lanka Schools Hockey teams, proving the strength of Mahamaya’s training and commitment. Today, hockey continues to inspire students, carrying forward a proud legacy of sporting excellence.
TABLE TENNIS
The team has consistently excelled at district, provincial, and national tournaments, winning titles in both team and individual events. In recent years, Mahamaya players have shone at All-Island Championships, with victories such as the Under-16 Girls’ Team Championship (2025) and individual titles at national ranking tournaments. Recognized at Colours Awards Ceremonies and celebrated as outstanding performers at provincial meets, Mahamaya’s table tennis champions continue to uphold the school’s proud tradition of sporting success.
ATHLETIC
The school’s athletes have consistently excelled at district, provincial, and national meets, winning medals across track and field events. From sprinting and long-distance running to relays, high jump, and shot put, Mahamaya has produced champions who represent the Central Province and Sri Lanka Schools teams. Recent highlights include strong performances at the Annual Interhouse Sports Meet 2025, where houses competed fiercely and records were broken, and continued success at the National School Games, proving Mahamaya’s enduring strength in athletics.
GYMNASTIC
The team has earned recognition at provincial and national championships, with standout performances such as Milni Munasinghe’s silver medal at the Sri Lanka Schools Gymnastics Championship 2023 — the only medal won by a Central Province school that year. Mahamaya gymnasts continue to inspire with their skill and dedication, proving the school’s growing strength in this demanding sport.
